In Safari HTMLArea edit buttons are just white space, and it is impossible to input text into fields at all.

Please try this out with a non-Drupal implementation of HTMLArea. If it is broken there, file a bug with the HTMLArea developers. Marking this as Postponed for now.

I can confirm this. See this comment thread on HTMLArea home. The demo is on the front page. Doesn't work on IE5 either. Since this is a bug that is outside of our control, I would add a note to the module description.
