Hi all,
This seems to have been asked a few times, but reviewing the Forum Posts involving this challenge, I believe all the obvious things have been done.
- I have duplicated default.settings.php in the site/default directory and renamed it settings.php, AND ensured that there are full write privileges.
- I have created a files directory inside of sites/default. and made sure that can also be written to (inside of?).
- I have created a MySQL database, and initial user, and made sure that the user has all privileges.
- The site is being hosted in a subdomain, so I have changed the advanced options Database host to that subdomain
After going through this multiple times, I get this error when I hit the "Save and Continue" button:
Failed to connect to your MySQL database server. MySQL reports the following message: Access denied for user 'rivermus_rmcomad'@'cp01.shiftreload.com.au' (using password: YES).
* Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
* Are you sure that you have typed the correct database hostname?
* Are you sure that the database server is running?
For more help, see the Installation and upgrading handbook. If you are unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your hosting provider.
Can anybody help? I have spent half a day trying to figure this out!
Cheers,
Bruce

It fixed itself!
I know what you're thinking; things DON'T fix themselves!
The only thing I did differently was close the browser window, open a new window to install.php, and re-enter the information. And, even though I had initially done this, I left the database location as "localhost" which worked.
Maybe the DB needed time? I hate it when things work out like this. It wasn't a typo; I copied and pasted db name, UID, and password. And, I'm certain that I tried both absolute host location and localhost.
