This is what I would like to do:

I want to add a rating module which will allow users to rate a thread in my forum, then users are able to sort the threads in each category by rating.

for rating use anyone of teh rating modules in the rating category of downloads

for sorting by rating investigate the views.module

get advanced help.module as well it will help a great deal with views.
