I would like to have a grouping, like in the normal module list, but ajaxified, ie. hiding all modules out of a group.

It currently is already possible to filter the list. Using this filter you can easily filter by category. Besides that, I will add a visual distinction between different categories, depending on how the list is sorted, in the future. I hope this is what you're aiming on.
