16 Drupal questions off the top of my head
Hi there,
First off I just wanted to say thanks for taking a minute to reply to these. I have been reading bits and pieces of the Drupal handbook. But since I've been hearing these forums are a great help, I figure I'd save myself some time (for now) and ask away. If my question seems vague, it probably means I'm asking for an explanation or URL to a page where it's explained how to do something. Here goes:
1: Can the news system show the 20 latest headlines on the left-top side of the site? With that I mean that it doesn't just look like a blog with the news in the centre of the frontpage. Kind of like this maybe www.saeger-in-web.de only more like newsitems on the right side as a website like this www.fok.nl Maybe this can be accomplished by shrinking the font size?
2: Is RSS automatically put on the site, like installing the Syndication script? Will RSS be syndicated from the Drupal newsitems automatically, or do I need to do something aside from enabling it in Drupal ? (What's Atomfeed or Feedburner for, do I need to subscribe to that and link it to my site running Drupal to get RSS to work?)
3: Is Statistics tracking included for visitor#/url tracking? Or is that new in 4.6?
4: Can the user login menu be made smaller or put at the bottom of each newsitem? It kind of looks like YES, see http://drupal.org/node/13777
5: How do I devide my newsitems into categories?
6: Should I add "captchas" to the user registration process to prevent spam, when registration along should/can prevent this already?
7: Is a mailinglist an option in Drupal?
8: Is a Comment Closer module needed to close down topic replies every week on a busy site?
9: Can the top design of the page (where you usually put your logo/slogun & sub-pages) be changed from a straight horizontal line to a (to me) more stylish dropping-to-the-left bottom line?
10: Can newsitem comments be moderated by a set user (mod) in case of rude language?
11: My (future) webhost claims it will allow me to auto-install Drupal 4.4, is this too old? I ask this, because for one of my sites I would like to use a 4.5 theme (Lincoln's Revenge) but don't know if it will work with Drupal 4.4? My 2nd question here would be, does Drupal 4.5 offer more options over version 4.4 for me(newbie) to try and install 4.5 or 4.6 myself?
12: I really like the blue drupal.org theme, does this come standard with version 4.4?
13: Is there a 404 error page you can set and have forward to the frontpage in seconds? If yes, are the node numbers easy to figure out? - http://drupal.org/node/15366
14: On Blogger they explain how to add Adsense ads to the sidebar, is it the same in Drupal? http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=974
15: Is Post scheduling possible in Drupal? Then I can use it via Ecto as well.
16: Is (thumbnailed) image posting possible in Drupal?
Thanks a million.

Wrong Forum
This isn't really a 'How Do I' question. It's Pre-installation, and I'm sure many answers to your questions are in that forum. I will answer #16 though...
...Yes.
Image module handles thumbnailing.
1: Yes? I can't seem to pull
1: Yes? I can't seem to pull up www.fok.nl, but www.saeger-in-web.de is a drupal website. If they can doit , so can you. Just use CSS.
4: Yes.
5: use 'categories' or sometimes known as 'taxonomy'
6: captchas are comepletely your decision as a web admin. if you need it, then use it other wise it would beg the question of why you're going through the extra effort.
7: Ezmlm
8: same as 6, its your preference on what kind of site you wish to run
9: drupal 4.7 is going to have more flexibility with placement of items, but as it stands with PHPTemplate you have a great amount of flexibility. check out the Drupal gallery and see what Drupal can do for you.
10: Yes
11: Yes 4.4 is old. 4.4 isn't even available on the download pages anymore. 4.5 offers more options, as done 4.6. There are many forum threads about hosting if you want to go with a different host.
12: Bluebeach is the name of drupal.org's theme. It is not publicly available anywhere.
13: CustomError
14: AdSense
16: Yes
4.4
And I would suspect that 4.4 has major security holes in it since the xml-rpc problems in 4.5 and 4.6 (which is why you need the latest versions of these) were not addressed with 4.4
I see
Thanks for all those answers, two more questions I have in light of those answers...
What would you do if you had no programming / webmaster experience? Choose a Drupal 4.4 auto-install (definite no-no by now, but still my hosting company's offer is great), or install 4.6 with some (5 to possibly 10) modules by yourself? It's installing the program, modules and adjusting the site layout / pages that scares me to be honest :(
I'm not sure if there are people on these forums helping newbie's like me out in setting up 2 Drupal site installs, if not for pay, I'd be happy to thank someone by giving them a movie, game or book off Amazon. I really have no idea how long an install would take out of someone's time?
Also about question 2:
To me it looks like RSS (Aggregator?) is automatically turned on when you install Drupal on a server, is this right or wrong?
install it yourself and everything is turned off
Your host is likely to only have Drupal core available in their auto install. If that is the case, eventually you would need to install other contributed modules on your own. Once you've done the base Drupal install, adding contrib modules is very easy.
Checkout DrupalART's Getting Started Guide. There are some good instructions there to assist in the site installation.
Also, because a Drupal site can be configured for so many different uses (and in different ways), everything is turned off when you first install.
Drupal 4.6.3 it is
Turns out my hosts website was outdated and it does have automatic installation of Drupal 4.6.3, yes! So this week I'll try and setup a basic site. That getting started guide will go a long way methinks, thanks for that.
It is very simple
www.saeger-in-web.de is my page. The left block is simply newsfeed aggregator.
