DashText is a new social networking site targeted at drivers and passengers of cars, trucks, motorcycles and other vehicles. Users can search vehicles by license plate, send private messages to drivers, shout at vehicles, view profiles and much more. It's the community for commuters introducing License Plate Messaging

The Philosophy

In traffic we interact with thousands of people every day. Observing other drivers or their vehicles often spark thoughts, feelings or questions. Whatever is on your mind, DashText allows you express yourself; shout your message and instantly be heard by thousands of people or send a private message to a single person.

The Site

Building the site has been a one man operation and my first Drupal project. It would have been impossible without the great Drupal community and some training from my friends at Lullabot. While working a full time job, development has taken a little over one year. The site was build in Drupal 5.

Some of the features available to registered users are:

  • Driver profile page
  • Vehicle page for up to five vehicles. Check out the license plate image!
  • Add platemates (friends, buddies) to user account
  • Post public messages (called shouts) addressed at (un)registered license plates. Shouts can also be posted to user's Twitter page.
  • Send private messages addressed at (un)registered license plates or registered users
  • Search for license plates
  • Rate, review and upload bumper stickers or stick them to user's vehicle
  • Rate and review the various license plates available in the USA

The Feedback

This is the first release of the site and I am planning to add more features in the next few months. Your feedback is highly appreciated!

I poked around for a bit but didn't see any way to see public messages in my area. Would be a nice feature.

Its a very cool site function-wise.

It wouldn't hurt to add more eye-candy in the right column, get yourself some press copy and link to your PR, that sort of thing.
