Cron isn't working and no one here seems to know how to help!!

I'm seeing the same error on a new 6.x Drupal install on Network Solutions. I'm new to Drupal and never have gotten cron.php to run properly. Sometimes I see this error, and sometimes I see the white page, but my searches never return anything, even when I search on known keywords...

I've been searching the forums and documentation but haven't found an answer yet.

Help a newbie out? Any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem. Also using Network Solutions. I'm running 6.8. I've tried deleting the cron_semaphore and cron_last variables and re-running cron. It doesn't seem to matter - it always says it fails or displays the long ugly "database has gone away" message. I also tried applying the patch suggested by another poster (http://drupal.org/node/346285) with no success. Any ideas? The thing that is kind of upsetting is that cron HAS run correctly before, just not for 2 or 2.5 weeks.

"Warning: MySQL server has gone away" means there is no database connection at the time where cron runs.

I sometimes have the same problem with my hosting provider (Hostgator) when they do maintenance or something. But it doesn't occur very often.

If you have this output at every cron job, you should ask your hosting provider what happens to your database at that point of time where your cron job runs.

There is also a general bug in Drupal 6.8 that cron does not run properly when not being called in a webserver environment. There is a patch available which worked for me after applying that. See http://drupal.org/node/346285

in a shared hosting environment, there will often be limitations on execution time for a PHP script. i sometimes saw errors like these on a site with shared hosting where cron had to run for a long time (uploading/downloading video)...

after cron failed this way, it would not run again until some manual cleanup was performed. (when attempting to run cron again, watchdog would log errors that cron was already running.) the manual cleanup necessary was to remove the 'cron_semaphore' variable. (with the devel module installed, you can do this through the UI at /devel/variable .)

To avoid confusion, I'm running ver 5.x

At first, cron was saying that it was attempting to re-run while it was already running. So, I was advised to delete cron_last and cron_semaphore using Devel. I did both.

My cron then stated that it had never been run. When I click on the "run cron manually" link, the error in the first post appeared.

I can NOT seem to get cron to run. I have even TRUNCATED my cache table, but the problem still exists.

anyway, i don't know that i'll be much help, but just to follow up on the idea i had: is cron.php chugging for a while before throwing the errors, or are you seeing the errors immediately? if it's running for a while first maybe it's related to PHP's max execution time, in which case you could take steps to limit the cron jobs (for example, at /admin/settings/search you can set the number of "Items to index per cron run").

To further be specific for you in the amount of time it takes between me clicking on the "run cron manually" link and the appearance of the error is less than a second (or however fast my internet connection happens to be that day).

If I click on "run cron manually" AGAIN, the error is not there, however, my cron look the same as the image attached.

Only until I delete cron_last and cron_semaphore do I get the first post error displayed.

In either regard, cron is not working.

short of disabling modules one at a time and rerunning cron. I'm out of ideas. good luck.
