Fantastic Rob! I'd be happy to branch for 7.x and put this in if it'll help you test the patch more easily. Otherwise, keep up the great work!

Here is a port patch I am using to utilize jquery UI in Drupal 7 :) Not using any new shiny APIs, but works - when the goal is to just use jquery UI and not care much with how it works inside :)

1) I've fixed the mess with branches in jquery_ui now.
2) Committed Gábor's patch to DRUPAL-7--1. (without testing)
3) Will create a convenience dev snapshot release for 7.x-1.x now.
