Should this feature not better be integrated into the atom module?

There is also the views_datasource module, which mentions:

Views Datasource plugins output content from node lists created in the Drupal Views interface in a variety of formats [...] like [...] Atom

But this module might be "overkill".

I'd love to see the atom.module grow (I'll create some more feature requests in a few days)

I'll agree that on a quick review this could probably be better implemented in atom.module.

I'm now a comaintainer of the atom.module and would love to integrate this in. What's the state of this project?
