Comments
Are the posts being published
or are they being put into the moderation queue?
Log in as a user with "administer nodes" rights and check the default workflow for forums at
admin/node/configure/types/forumThe default options should be set to "Published"
Also, on the admin/node screen, the status column should be set to published.
Finally, in admin/access, for the comment module, at least one role should have the rights to post comments.
Hope this helps.

Still having trouble
So I'm super cool and did have the comment module enabled. I was thinking users were going to be able to comment on the static pages, which they can't because that's an option that you can disallow them to do. I still can't see them though. They are in the administer >> content page but when I click on the navigation link for forums it shows my containers and the forums, but no topics.
When you look at the forum posts
in the administer >> content page, what is the status of the posts?
Try posting a comment as your admin/first user, and set the status of the post to "Published" and "Promoted to Front Page".
Is this site live, or on a local test server?

I get a similar problem ...
When I post a topic it ends up in the
"my forum topics" but at no stage do I get to choose which forum topic / container the post should go into.
ie: there is not combo box with the list of containers and topics as there is when I post here.
Have I not installed the forum module correctly ?
rgs, james.
Have you set up any forum categories?
When you go to admin/forum, have you created any containers and/or forums?

Known bug and known fix.
I had the same problem in several communities. A counter got out of sync when I created Forums (taxonomies) for testing purposes, then deleted them and created new ones. All my postings ended up getting categorized according to the original, and now deleted, taxonomies/forums.

And yes, searching is a good way to start :)
