whats the type of community website that actually regards a real community? as in a township. where everyone in town can use the site as a focal point for news, calendars, communication forum style ect.....
is there a word for this animal? or am i just nuts?
im trying to find out more info about how to go about building one with drupal, what modules are handy, and what others have done and maybe read up on their successes and failures.

It's hard to search on this because people use "community" and even "portal" for a lot of different things. There are quite a few out there, though. Most are run by the newspapers.
