Nice menus does not currently set the 'active' menu, and thus Drupal does not render the breadcrumbs correctly.

I have added this line to my version which does the job - perhaps add it to the release?

Line 290 of the development release:

  if (isset($menu)) {
    $page_menu = menu_tree_page_data($menu_name);
    $trail = nice_menus_build_page_trail($page_menu);
    // make active menu for breadcrumbs etc.
    menu_set_active_menu_name($page_menu);
    unset($page_menu);
  }

You might want to look at this issue, which made its way in into the 6.x-2.x version of Nice menus. #219804: Set active menu trail CSS selectors

EDIT: I should add that setting the active menu goes all pear-shaped when you have more than one Nice menu on the page.
