Hi, I was playing around with drupal a few months ago and got the profile module, which I believe lets you setup customisable profile fields etc.. I am looking for this module again but am having no success in finding it, if I go to http://drupal.org/project/Profile I get the error message

The profile.module is a core module that allows you to create fields in user profiles
If you do not have this core module for some reason, get it from a new download of drupal 6.x
If you meant something more than the core profile.module investigate the advanced profile kit in the contrib area. Ensure that your core module is present and enabled first.
Do I need profile module with APK?
Just want to confirm what you said, and make sure I do this right.
Do I need to enable the core profile module in order to use advanced profile kit?
It seems logical, but the APK project page doesn't mention it as a requirement.

APK ties together quite a few modules these days. One would have to reread every readme.txt for each component being added.
My best suggestion is to test them on a test site to find the proper combination.
Profile module comes with
Profile module comes with Drupal core. If its features aren't robust enough for your needs, look up Content Profile module.
Edit: typing on my iPhone... VM beat me to it :)

If you are going to install
If you are going to install Content Profile, do you want the core Profile module disabled?
