I wrote an action for adding/removing node references, and have been trying to decided if it is worth releasing as a stand alone module. If you are interested in bundling this functionality with VBO, I would be happy to give you the code. It works right now, but it could still use a little polishing (input sanity checking, UI enhancements, etc).

@starbow: I think this could still be helpful to some people. Field actions hasn't been touched in a while, so this would likely be a better place to put it for now.
