Under Garland, Gravatar user pics show up fine for both posts and comments.

Switching to Nitobe, only default user pic shows (enso), even though under admin/build/themes/settings/nitobe, both "User pictures for ..." are checked.

What module are you using to pull in Gravatar images? Drupal only uses its own user images by default.

The module used to pull gravatar images is http://drupal.org/project/gravatar
I'm seeing the same thing, no gravatar images with Nitobe, but works fine with Garland.
