but once enable Realname (6.x-1.1) and configure it to show realnames in nodes trying to load some profiles ( specifically those that have the fields populated..by default all my users have a firstname but no last name and the module is configured to pull both) i get this error

I have no idea what that message means. Are you using some other module for retrieving profiles from another site?

No , although it seems to be related to the server. My site is on a shared instance and once in a while it seems like the machine gets into a state where things run VERY slow, running top on the site shows the sql processes taking up all the processing and random pages start displaying the message above when you try to load them...

It's possible, I suppose. All of my sites run on shared hosting and you must occasionally expect that some other user is going to hog the resources. I have never seen this happen though.
