I'd like to be able to upload files (attach them to anode) by entering an external url (http or ftp). In this way, you would be uploading from a server, not your local pc. PLEASE DO NOT suggest modules that do this if they do not integrate with the upload module. I am using the upload module and if you do have a suggestion like that, please make sure that I would have some way of transferring my current cheme over to the new module scheme. Example: Let's say you know of a moudle that can do this, explain how I would go about setting it up so that I'm not changing the urls of my current files. I have lots of files, and cannot afford to be messing with the current urls. I really hope I can get some help here. One of the things this forum really suffers from is having items get to the bottom of the page unanswered.

Article comparing modules
Have you tried searching Drupal.org with the keyword 'embed' or 'embeded'. Embed means 'Attaching Files Using An External URL'.
http://drupal.org/project/modules?filters=tid%3A67&text=embeded
The are at least 10 'upload module'. I'm assuming you're referring to 'FileField' or 'ImageField' module.
If this is the case I wrote an article comparing modules able to upload files to a remote server http://drupal.org/node/567432
In this article search for the table title 'Supported modules'. The table list a few modules compatible with 'FileField' or 'ImageField'.
