We have Tapestry installed from the Drupal project page download. We'd now like to add icons, which we understand requires a download from Roopletheme. Is it necessary to re-install the theme completely, or can we just add the Icons folder to our existing install? We have done some serious customization of .css that we don't want to lose.

Installing the icons and including the file icon.css should be all that is necessary. Easiest thing to do is to download both flavors of the theme and compare the difference in the files... they're pretty minimal.
