Is it possible to list similar stories when a user clicks on one story below the story they clicked on? Maybe some kind of views that locates similar tagged stories and presents a list below the selected story?

Try http://drupal.org/project/relateditems or http://drupal.org/project/relatedlinks. Unfortunately, both are still in the process of upgrading to Drupal 6... but perhaps you can help the maintainers test and fix bugs.
