You might also want to read some of the documentation (follow the documentation tab at the top of the page). There is a section on Drupal version numbering that should clear up what you describe as, "two extant versions with such widely diverse version numbers...."

It's pretty simple. Use the current version unless there is something in contrib that is essential to your site and isn't ready yet. Even then, it is usually in your best interest to help that "something" along rather than starting a new site on the old version.
