I have created a blog for a client on the flont page by just using the Promote to Homepage box. Now the client wants something else on the homepage. Is there anyway to move the blog off the homepage and to a link from a menu item, without using views or the Blog module? Could a "Promote to Page X" box also be added the Publishing Options?

I am still getting used to views and am concerned about what I will need to do to get all the layout from views to match what I currently get by just promoting a bunch of pages to the homepage.

Thanks.

Implement Views on your test site to see how you like it and what it does. What you want to do can be pretty easily accomplished by out-of-the-box functionality in Views and a reasonable taxonomy.

To move the nodes away from the frontpage:

  1. Go to /admin/content/node and use the filter to only show content with status = promoted.
  2. In the list shown select the nodes that you want to move away. The topmost checkbox selects all nodes.
  3. Use the Update Option "Demote from frontpage".

To show these nodes with a view you need to know a filter-criterion, something they have in common to distinguish them from the other nodes. If you have used a specific content type only for the blog nodes, you can use that:

  1. Add a new view. /admin/build/views/add
  2. Give it a name. Don't change the other options. Press next.
  3. Add a display of type Page
  4. Select Menu from the Page settings block.
  5. Select Normal menu entry
  6. Give it a title. You may select a Menu here, but for the moment stay with Navigation. Press Update.
  7. Select Path from the Page settings block.
  8. Enter the path for your view and press Update.
  9. Press + in the Fields-Block
  10. Select the things you want to show in that view, for instance "Node: Title" and "Node: Body" and press Add.
  11. Press + in the Filters-Block
  12. Select "Node: Type" and press Add.
  13. Select "Is One of" and the node type you are using for this blog. Press Update default display.
  14. Press Save.

If not, use something else:

  • You could create a new vocabulary (with the taxonomy module) and assign it to your content type and then edit all blog nodes and give them a term, that you can use in the views filter.
  • You could also add field using CCK.

If you need to change many nodes have look if there's a modul that helps doing mass changes. I recommend drupalmodules.com to search for modules.

Thanks, so the answer is no. Views is the only way.

Guidot, Thanks for the extra guidance. I have been playing with views some, but have always struggles with getting the output to look pleasing. I come from the visual design side, not the coder side.

I was able to get exactly what I wanted after following your steps and then changing the Page style to HTML List and the Row Style to Node. This picked up and reused all my existing styling I did earlier on the blog. Before I selected Node, I was loosing the styling and dreading have to maintain it separately.
