Right now you can only add taxonomy terms one at a time; it would be nice to update role permissions more quickly. How about an "add all orphaned categories for this role" or something like this? This feature request is probably a simpler solution for my other feature request here: http://drupal.org/node/364058 (although I like the more robust admin settings in my other feature request).

The patch in #689668: Recursive functionality: automatically set permission to the child terms. addresses this (for the most part).
