I'm thinking of learning Drupal to use on a series of related Websites (drawing design from common templates as well as individual site templates). I've been reading about phptemplate and see that it's pretty much straight PHP. Other apis have an xml layer to create more elegant syntax than straight php. I'm wondering if there are any modules or additions to Drupal's core now available or in the works to simplify working with Drupal's phptemplate? Or what recommendations as far as books and other resources I could consult for learning phptemplate? I don't want to learn PHP entirely. Are there components of PHP that weigh more heavily in phptemplate than other parts of the language?

In short what are some recommended strategies for learning phptemplate?

Thanks all
