We recently posted an ad for a "PHP/Drupal" developer on craigslist. We got a chuckle from this response so I wanted to share. Enjoy!

(reply from job posting)

Hello,

I am contacting you this way to let you know that your request for a drupal/php developer is going to be a little difficult due to drupal being a “GUI” development environment and not actually a programming platform.

A PHP developer like myself doesn’t need a GUI to create websites or handle updating a website.

With Drupal, your limited to the capabilities of drupal and nothing more. Your request for a php developer is more likely going to produce more candidates for employment than a drupal/php individual.

Please review what Drupal is before requesting help with it.

Well, this is a great example of the limits of a PHP developer working alone in his garage. He cannot see outside his room the benefits of a large community like Drupal.

Now that's funny.... next!

I'm dying to know what you wrote back, but s/he's so pathetic that any rebuke seems almost cruel. Still, perhaps something like "Please review what Drupal is before submitting unsolicited advice" would suffice.

Oh, man, that is too funny. I guess I don't need those PHP skills I picked up over the years. Good to know my three modules are going to write themselves with just a bit of pointing and clicking.

Seriously, though, you're probably better off posting in the paid services forum here. We have a good community and hiring from within the community is often beneficial.

I respectfully disagree that posting in the paid services forum is the best resource for dev shops looking to hire experienced Drupal developers. Some of my best gigs have come from craigslist postings, which tend to be higher quality and pay more. I suspect that craigslist respondents are also better qualified although mmilano's recent experience certainly weakens that argument. :-)

Well, having never tried to hire someone, I'm not going to argue it. Just seemed to me that if you are looking for someone with a particular skill, it makes more sense to go to where they hang out.

I think paid services is good for private individuals and small companies looking for a short-term technical resource, but I believe craigslist is a better way to go for an employer looking to hire or contract a professional developer. I think the challenge for an employer posting in paid services is to distinguish their post from the many paltry bounty offers and pleas for help under the guise of paid work. Eventually the powers that be might want to create a separate forum just for professional job postings.

+1... Both employers and developers have this issue, in my experience. Michelle, I think you have the right idea, and I would love to see gdo develop a better resource for both types.

Thanks for sharing this with us, mmilano. I've had to endure some similarly mis-informed individuals so this is funny indeed.
