I'm sorry if someone else has already asked about this feature - I didn't see one similar to what I'm asking; also if there is already a way to do this feel free to call me an idiot under your breath and point me in the right direction :)

The site I'm working on is not hosting a "traditional" store. Rather, the products we are going to be selling are members' choices of quotes and poems on selected items (such as framed art, a plaque, a coffee mug, a snow-globe, etc.)

What we want to do is give the option for people to view a quote on our site, and be able to select either "Add to Cart" or "Buy Now" - then select the type of product they want the quote to be mounted to.

Is there a way to do this?

I currently have "quotes" selected as a product type - and the links appear to work great. Even if I could just build a drop down menu into the checkout page, I think that would work but I don't know how to do that or which file to do that too.

Thanks for your help...

Hmm, this is a hard one. Not hard for ec, but more just wrapping my head around it.

Basically I see it as the quote is a master product and then there is a link to all the other products which can be sold with the quote on them.

Would you print to order or would you have the products with the printing all ready done?

If it is print to order then you could just have all the base products, the cups, shirts etc. Then with the quotes you would link it to all the products that you can have it printed on. Then when you look at the quote you see the list of product and prices of what you can have it on.

If you can expand on this it would be great.

in 6.x-4.x this is not really possible. In 7.x-5.x this will be able to be done without any issue.

Awesome, thanks :)

The client never got back to me regarding whether or not it was going to be print to order... But I think it is as she is not keeping a large inventory of items.

Basically, her inventory has, say, 15 of each type (plaque, frame, coffee mug, etc.)

She wants people to be able to go to her site - which is really a huge collection of favorite/famous quotes. At last I checked, her site contained somewhere in the vicinity of 100,000+ different quotes in about 60 categories. So really, she wants people to be able to browse the quotes, click on "Add to cart", and then on the next screen allow them to choose which type of material the quote will be inscribed on.

Hope it makes better sense now? Can't wait to try it out! :)
