Default field values in v6 (similar to nodeformtemplate in v5)

Does anyone know of a way to prepopulate field values / form elements per content type in Drupal v6? We used 'nodeformtemplate' in v5; however, there is no v6 version. Is there a better method? I see the 'prepopulate' module; however, it seems focused strictly on URLs.

I've never used that module, but it sounds similar to http://drupal.org/project/prepopulate?
