I'm about to start my 1st drupal site and would appreciate some basic 1st step approach help.
I don't need someone to do this for me, just help me with the steps,structure, explain terminolgy etc. so I can learn more effectively.

I would like a parent to be able to create an account, enter in some details for their children, and have each child given their own page containing info (how they are doing, school reports etc) submitted/updated on a regular basis by the parent.
I'd also like a 'summary page' where all the children in the family are displayed on one page.
Other adult family members (who are site members) can be given permission to view the summary and individual child pages.
I think a 2stage password system is required,
1 for general readonly viewing, the other for editing their own child details
I'm assuming organic groups is the way,after lots of reading. But I need some help in defining, what i want in terms of content types, nodes, profiles, stories, pages, groups, permissions, editable fields etc.
Workflow would be something like.
Kid comes homes from school, browses to this family site, and without logging in! (remember me?), sees their current 'summary page', can click on their own name to see a detailed page and can see a summary of how their cousins are doing, when their birthday is etc. from a separate friends sidebar which they could click to see a detailed cousins page.
Then dad comes home and the child tells him that he got an A in class, so dad then clicks an edit button on the childs summary or detail page, enters a password, and can then update the childs school grades field direct from he child detail page or child detail page.
Dad says well done and gives the child $2, he can then update the allowance block on the child pages by clicking the $2 button and Good Grade catagory too.
Dad then logs out of 2nd stage permissions and the site reverts to 1st stage readonly state. But now cousins/friends of the child can see updated status in their own friends sidebar etc.
any guidance really appreciated.
e.g. a list of modules to install,
overview of creation,
i.e. parent registration forms with multiple child details?, pages to build, how to update number of house points won at school that day, new grade results etc.
use views to create summary pages or even child detail pages referencing the school grade node???
Getting a bit overwhelmed with where to start and how it fits together.
one last thing, how would I have a block or page (again with 2nd stage password), say, with the childs current allowance balance showing and then be able to add and deduct amounts for various reasons, i.e. good grades or spent on movies etc. (not real money, just representative numbers)
i'd realy like a simple guide along the lines of:
1st create page called Parent, add these fields of type...
Then create profile fields including fields Childs Name, DOB ....
Create allowance page, include addition field, deduction field and computed balance field of balance field = balance field + addition field OR balance field - deduction field.
Create view by clicking..
create summary page by adding this view....
add an "invite uncle to view" button by...
etc etc
Something like that if possible.
