its not a good practice to put your custom modules together with drupal's default modules, instead you put them at sites/all/modules, if modules directory is not present under all, you can create them.
Being new to Drupal I added all my new modules into the modules folder. I see now that all new ones should be added into the sites/all/modules/ folder. Now that I have uninstalled the new ones and then copied them all to the new sites/all/modules folder, how do I access them. I'm not finding admin/settings/ for accessing this folder to see the new modules. Can you please assist me with were to find this menu.

You mentioned you uninstalled the modules before moving them to sites/all/modules. Did you enable them after the file move?
