search_files_files not populating and documentation site links broken

I and another developer are trying desperately to get the module up and running properly on a production LAMP environment. The main problems that we are running into are:

1) although the helper apps are executable from script and the docs and doc directory are readable, the search_files_files table won't seem to populate. No errors are being returned, it just seems as though nothing is happening. We have tried relative, virtual and absolute paths to the doc directory (and we run cron manually after every update) to no avail.

2) In a previous thread titled 'Configuration' started April 7, 2008 there were several links provided by James Glasgow (maintainer) to documentation, all of which are now broken:

Is there any meaningful documentation available for this module?

The aforementioned thread just kind of dropped off in mid-December, unresolved. Unfortunately, there is precious little that I could find anywhere on the web in regards to this module. This would be a fantastic mechanism to add to the functionality resource list, and it seems to work well for some people, so whatever help we could get in terms basic configuration and troubleshooting documentation would be greatly appreciated.
