Can the phone module be used to validate a phone number field in 'create new account' when using the profiles module? (i.e. username, e-mail address and the newly added phone number)

Phone works well for setting up a new content type, but have not found a way to validate the phone field for a new account when a person signs up for a new account.

Is there a way that will work? Or is it the wrong module for this application? Suggestions on what does work?
