in drupal 6, is there a way to do this so in the editing of a profile the fields are on one page instead of inside different tabs? I haven't found any answers on this.

You can put all custom profile fields in one category. IIRC that will put them all in one page.
Unfortunately that will give you two tabs: one with the core user account stuff and one with your custom fields.

There is always a way (write a module or do some serious hacking) but in this case it is not provided out-of-the-box.

use onepage profile module to edit the profile on one page.
