Is there going to be a new Alpha, beta or dev version of boost for V6 coming out sometime soon?

mikeytown2’s picture

What steps does it take to make someone a maintainer of the 6.x branch? I would nominate alex s, he's been writing some good patches for boost.

Priority: Normal » Critical

@mikeytown2: i'm not sure that you can nominate someone.

But to solve this issue maybe try to speak with the project maintainer Arto or just contact one of the other people that have CVS access and point them to this issue.
From Boost project page: "Boost was originally developed by Arto Bendiken. Currently the following people have CVS access: Moshe Weitzman, Barry Jaspan, Justin Miller, Ben Lavender, Josh Koenig and Ian Ward.".

And i totally agree with you guys: boost needs another release :)

Just submitted an issue in regards to this
#396972: Boost Dev AWOL

If someone stands up and says "I would like to maintain" then after due consideration I will give her/him CVS access 'cos it's quite clear that the development is stalled a bit.

mikeytown2’s picture

@chx
If no one steps up to the plate, by late march I would like to maintain.

I should probably do this correct? Apply for contributions CVS access

chx’s picture

Yes that's way to it

Wonderful, mikeytown2! I was just looking for this module again, and would really appreciate something that's under active development. Looking forward to the end of this month! ;)

This is great news! This mod has made it possible to run Drupal on a medium-crummy shared host with amazing success and results. --see it work bexleymarine.com-- A welcome addition to the tool box. I am still renaming, moving and deleting cached files by hand till some issues get some attention. I don't know how to fix that code...(node/17) vs (alias) problem. For htaccess had to put bexleymarine.com in place of server_name to get it to go after trying all the files that came with.

I think this would help a lot of us running on VPSs. This could be a huge "boost" for the Drupal community and worldwide proliferation for that matter. I eagerly await a release version for Drupal 6.

bexleymarine.com: your site is BLAZINGLY fast. I can't wait to implement this module.

I want to see a Drupal expert to take over Boost, who knows Drupal's page generation inside out. Even if he/she just acts as a mentor for other contributors and co-maintainers.

From what I can tell, some of the issues marked as RTBC are not really RTBC.

joshk’s picture

@sun Agreed.

I really like boost, and would be willing to do some advising here.

mikeytown2’s picture

Below is the order in which I see the patches being applied.
The most important patches have to do with the clearing of the cache based on various triggers. Websites without css/js can be an awful experience.
boost_cache_clear_all does not delete files
CSS Aggregating & Boost: page not found - css file

Other critical patch
Fatal error: Unsupported operand types in includes/common.inc on line 1275 - after user registration

Fixing errors
db_set_active() - fix watchdog error

After that these are some of the nice patches that are not critical
Cache pages with query strings
Support Faceted Search - RegExp Issue With :

Next see if #349373: Replace file_put_contents with file_save_data & #364327: boost_file_path generates file names that are never processed by htaccess can be done

Finally roll out the monster patch
Remove symlink creation. Let each path have own file

After that update some of the help txt based on some of the issues brought up in the issue queue. Example #244072: Nginx integration

dbeall’s picture

@mickytown2
I would really like to see your cache rebuild function added to boost, please. It would be great having afterburners on the boost rocket.

mikeytown2’s picture

@dbeall
It runs completely independent of drupal; that will most likely be left as a separate download. It's also ugly code; need to spend some time to clean it up & preform better checks. It's very shoe-stringed together; works for me, don't know about anyone else.
Auto Regenerate Cache (pre-caching)

Title: New release of dev: integrate patches with drupal cvs » Request to take over project
Status: Active » Needs review

@mikeytown2: Could we add the issue tag "Release blocker" to those issues instead? This issue will vanish once we sorted out how to proceed.

@joshk + mikeytown2: So here is my question and proposal: joshk becomes the new primary maintainer of Boost; reviewing, mentoring, and committing RTBC patches in the first instance. mikeytown2 prepares some patches and when everything works out, we'll add mikeytown2 as co-maintainer or maybe even transfer the project once more.

Adhering to Best practices for co-maintaining projects will most probably simplify this process a lot.

While I would be able to do some additional reviews, I can't promise them, because I'm already swamped with a lot of other modules.

rsvelko’s picture

bump.

mark this as closed/fixed if you guys figured that out. I will wait a little and jsut then apply for co-maintainership if it is needed somehow. Till then patches and reviews and testing is mor than enough for me.

Here's a copy of the email I got over 2 weeks ago

From: Moshe Weitzman
To: Me, Ian Ward, Arto Bendiken, Josh Koenig, Barry Jaspan
Subject: cvs access for boost

hi mike. i asked the other boost maintainers and thy all agreed that
you deserve commit access on the project. i just granted you commit
access. please commit the pending patches that are ready and manage
the issue queue as you see fit. as you know, this module is poorly
maintained and we welcome any love you can give it.

Closing this issue as boost is actively being patched again.

Re-opening so I can be given the "Administer maintainers" permission.

Noone reasonable could have any problems with that. The project basically already is yours. If you want to get technical then you did wait two weeks... more than two years ago, just the handover of an abandoned project was not done fully.

sun’s picture

Agreed there. Thanks @mikeytown2 for moving this project forward!
