For the implementation of the new Marketplace section, we need to create three "vocabularies" (or three sections of the same vocabulary):

- Businesses (listing businesses by their characteristics: size, legal structure, etc.)
- Service (listing businesses by the services they provide: IA, Design, Development, eCommerce, etc.)
- Sector (listing businesses vertically by their section: education, entertainment, finance and legal, supposing it actually makes sense)

We will do a first round with free tagging to see what service providers want to use, then cut down to a curated vocabulary before launch.

Title: Need three "vocabularies" for Service provider listings » Organizing service provider listings with taxonomy
drumm’s picture

The two things I keep hearing, which are currently missed are company size and project size.

Budget Ranges might be good too. lets a potential client know who they can afford realistically. (If the firm opts into disclosing budget sizes.)

drumm, your "pave the well-trod path" approach with the intial free tagging sounds spot-on.

Just wondering if any thought should be given to aligning one or more of your proposed taxonomies with "standard" or common taxonomies/ontologies that are out there in the wider world. Or at least have those existing taxonomies inform/influence those that you are building.

Main candidate would be the vertical experience (there's a US schedule, I think, as one potential reference point). And maybe there's a taxonomy somewhere in open source devel land that might inform the skills/specialisations.

EDIT:

Taxonomy label suggestions:
Business -> Business Type (I think Alex UA has kind of suggested this too)
Service -> Specialization
("Sector" works for me)

Format agreement between taxonomy terms:
One principle that should apply to (or at least inform) all terms in these taxonomies is format agreement, e.g. full term or abbreviated.
Currently the prototype has "IA" and "Usability", but a more agreeable pair would be either IA and UX or Information Architecture and Usability.
(Not the only consideration when deciding on terms, I know, but it should be one of them.)

(BTW, Is this the right place for me to make these suggestions?)

Abbreviating seems good, especially if we make use of descriptions see #1116222: Taxonomies on Marketplace listing (ordering, length, use of description).

In terms of labeling, I'd be happy to monitor the terms (which should be uppercase by default but will probably end up getting entered as lowercase), as well as duplicates.

lisarex’s picture

So the duplicates are starting to appear!!
"architecture" "site architecture" "software architecture"
"Drupal development" "Development" "custom module development"
Content Data Migration (3) vs Data migration (5)

And some people are tagging things in other languages which we can't support/allow, right?

We've also got Health Care and Healthcare.

Questions:
At what point does the length of each list (esp. Sectors and Services) become too overwhelming for users to actually find anything useful? (Noting that it's only been about a week so far.)

Is there going to be an expectation that companies use umbrella terms (so medical, doctor, health care would fall under 'medical'?

As for the Spanish terms, while it makes sense for the company itself (only country listed is Columbia) we should probably stick to English (as d.o is about 98%* English only.) It will become unwieldy when we get French, Japanese, German and Italian companies with their own terms.

*made that number up, but seems about right

Yes, please can we disable the freetagging, now that we've got a good chunk of providers in?

I'm totally willing to create terms by request via issue queue, rather than keep combining redundancies and second-guessing what is meant by "Concept" or "Self-service" ... not to mention making sure things are capitalized correctly.

The D.A. has made an investment in the Marketplace; let's ensure it rocks :)

drumm’s picture

These are no longer tags. We should add a little note to the help text for how to request terms.

Title: Organizing service provider listings with taxonomy » Clean up organization-related taxonomy terms

Here's a first pass at tidying up the Services vocab. I'll leave this for a few days for review, revisit these, then start removing the ones in the 'delete' column and making sure sentence case is consistent. There's def some more of the technical concepts that I am not sure are different enough to warrant keeping distinct.

re #13, the submission guidelines now says

Review the organization listings policy first.
Request improvements to vocabularies by filing an issue.
People with your organization name in the user profile field "current company or organization" will be shown on your organization page.

There are 89 terms to delete ... rather than do these individually, I've got a view with VBO that I created on a scratch site and could import. I need to enable Views UI temporarily while I do this, import the view, clean up the terms, then delete the view.... any probs w/ this? (I put this into IRC but this gets mroe eyes on it)

I'll handle delting the terms, am checking with Megan to make sure communication with all Organization node authors is coordinated.

The first few services in the spreadsheet are already gone: and post-launch support, Android, application integration, Architecture Consulting, Architecture Web development, Cheerleading, Collaboration and Sharing Tools, collective access, entrenamiento

I'm removing the other 79. Are the sectors to remove finalized as well?

lisarex’s picture

Yeah, I had deleted some of the terms already.

The sectors are ready to be cleaned out; they aren't perfect and I haven't checked them with anyone else yet. If I had more time I could do a bit of research to ensure they match other industry lists.

Works for me, we can always change the terms later. I deleted the 42 sector terms.
