When I select JUST "Give update access" for friends, the ability to view the node is taken away. In order to update the node and view the node, both view access and update access need to be selected.

If a user selects "Give update access" for a friend, can the view access be 1) turned on by default (my preference as it visually tells the user what is going on) or 2) make view access implied?

I think this is default Drupal behavior. For example in views if I were to filter on updated nodes, I wouldn't see the initial created node either. I could be wrong though. Are you still looking for this feature?
