Does this mean the 5.x branch is dead? Geeze i hope not.. i really rely on this module and i'm not prepared to make the jump to 6.x yet.

I'm not doing the 6.x to 5.x backport. Nobody else has wanted to do it, which is why the SA says there is no solution and to uninstall.

Someone sponsored a 5.x backport. A 5.x-2.x-dev release should be publishing in a few hours (whenever the next snapshot runs).

Installed and working fine so far, although I did see a noticeable jump in CPU use after enabling the module.. not sure if it's related or not yet..
