Have you looked at the http://drupal.org/project/docapi project? It was a summer of code project (http://groups.drupal.org/node/10890) in 2008.

I have and I don't understand how to get it to work. I've installed it a few times and could never get it to work :\

Same here. Actually, the module itself states, that it only works for importing JPEG files (what kind of content that might be?). I get those files uploaded but nothing more.
The really hard part is parsing the input format(s) and converting them to something Drupal understands. I fear that this module hasn't got far in this regard.
