Negative Regex-lookahead to exclude whiteANYTHINGhouse?

I need a negative lookahead to exclude strings like that:

white house
white_-house
whiteANYTHINGandANYLENGTHhouse

This code doenst work:

preg_match("#white.*(?!house)#i", $str)

Any idea?
