Maybe it would be good to integrate with the validation API module?

IT already has the framework setup to handle cck fields (in fact any form field) not just title and body, has a UI that can be hooked into, has a 6.x release already. Can add "validate this" links to all form fields.

Seems like this might be a better solution?

The Drupal 6 version of Maxlength is no longer supported so I'm marking this Closed (works as designed).

I also encourage you, if you haven't already, to upgrade your site to Drupal 8/9. We are actively maintaining that version and you would enjoy all of the other features of the latest version of Drupal.
