On Tuesday, February 17, 2009, the Drupal Association General Assembly held its third election. The Drupal Association elected both new permanent members to the Drupal Association, and a new Board of Directors.
There were 27 candidates who submitted applications to the Drupal Association, which includes existing members re-applying for board positions in 2009. Of those, we elected six new members as permanent members, and a board consisting of eight individuals.
Specific vote results are itemized below the break.
Six new members received a 2/3 majority vote by the attending members of the General Assembly were elected as Permanent Members:
- Tiffany Farriss
- Bill Fitzgerald
- Cary Gordon
- Jeff Robbins
- David Strauss
- Kristof Van Tomme
This brings our total number of permanent members to 30. For a full list, see http://association.drupal.org/about/staff.
Following the Permanent Member vote, the new General Assembly was asked to elect a new Board. Of 9 eligible members, 7 were selected, bringing the total board for 2009 to 8 members:
- Dries Buytaert
- Angela Byron
- Tiffany Farriss
- Larry Garfield
- Cary Gordon
- Gerhard Killesreiter
- Kieran Lal
- Jacob Redding
We would like to sincerely thank the 2008 board, who achieved many excellent goals including spear-heading Drupal.org redesign efforts, putting on two successful Drupalcons, and establishing a Legal FAQ around GPL issues. Thanks also go to Dries Knapen, who has stepped down to focus on his professional life after doing a tremendous job boot-strapping the Drupal Association as one of its founding members. And last but not least, we would also like to thank all community members who applied. These votes are never easy, and we hope to see even those of you who were not selected this time continue to pursue the excellent goals outlined in your applications.

Exciting growth
Congrats and thank you to the new team of Directors, Ambassadors, Members, and Partners with the Drupal Association; This staff is a "W" in my opinion to reach out, educate and grow more Drupal community activities.
Im especially excited to see new business development tools and event coordination advancements. It would be great to see standards put in place to form an official 'Drupal Association Accreditation' program(s) relating to User Groups, Drupal Camps, Drupal Training Seminars, or other events that operate with Drupal CMS as a core focus to attract and organize a Drupal entourage. I see this as a way to develop, document and report accredited activity on a local level within the Drupal community.

No losers in this election.
I was one of the 27 who applied for a position and one of the 21 who did not make it. I do not believe that any one lost in this election. The 2/3 majority vote needed to accept a new member is a high standard that insures a steady yet calculated growth to the Drupal Association. I take comfort in that approach even though it cost me a position this year.
My application is viewable here http://buytaert.net/da-2009/node/99 until the 2009 election site is taken down.
I want to say that my drive to see Drupal Groups flourish is in no way hindered by the results handed down yesterday. My involvement in local and regional events, expos, and conventions will not slow. In and beyond my own region, my efforts will continue as I seek to unite group leaders, create a value-added relationships and experiences, and assist in the growth and new formations of Drupal Groups in all communities.
I remain convinced that a position in the Drupal Association would aid me in these efforts. It would serve as a major validation to my cause while supplying me a level of "weight" that I would carry with me into situations where I interact with others, in and beyond the Drupal Community.
The process of running for the Drupal Association was an enriching experience and I am better for having experienced it.
Look for me again next year.
I am thankful for those who encouraged me to apply and those who sponsored and endorsed me. You saw value in the position. You saw value in me. For that, I am truly thankful.

Great attitude, Doug...
What I interpret from the results of the voting is that members voted fairly conservatively, on individuals that have done a lot of high-profile, visible work in the community around the area they were applying for, and individuals permanent members could be confident were likely to follow through on their goals.
So probably the best strategy for those who were not accepted this year is to forge ahead with the goals that you each applied with, and try and figure out ways to work directly with one or more Association members who have those goals under their purview. This will both help raise your visibility to the larger body of permanent members, and also will prove that you are able to make good on your intentions; both of which should make your application next year a no-brainer to say "yes" to.
Congratulations
Congratulations to all the board members on your election.

Full Respect.
I have full respect to all the applicants, especially those who did not make it through. Please don't give up, keep working hard and try again next year.
Here's to another strong DA board and the big push to D7. I'd also like to acknowledge all the hard work of the previous board, your input has been truly magical. Sad to see "the other Dries" leave. Some people's work was behind the scenes and so vital to keep Drupal on its feet.
