But I'm wondering why not build some actions and triggers for ad notifications? Maybe I'm not entirely clear yet on how actions & triggers work, but seems like an action like "send tokened email" would work nicely if there were some triggers like "Ad is active for one month" or "Ad will expire in 3 days" etc.

I have yet to use Ad on the live site with my real advertisers, so I don't really know how the Owner concept is going to work. I like the idea of setting up the emails for each of them myself rather than telling them what to click so they can configure their notifications. Views/triggers would put that in admin hands.

I will be revisiting the notifications system soon, and will be looking at how to gain from actions, triggers, and possibly the contrib token module.

Improvements did go into the ad_notify module, but it wasn't ever integrated with actions and triggered. Moving into a pending state, awaiting funding or a patch.
