It works great with accent characters too. (like ő,õ,ű,û)
When I tried to replace a character to space, (PUNCTUATION SPACE -> SPACE) it said: "Replace field is required."
So it doesn't accept space for replacement. IMHO replacing to nothing would also acceptable.
I don't know this is bug or feature, but please fix this. My drupal site is an online version of a newspaper. The content is copied from DPD, which contains an unhealthy amount of strange characters. Some of them (like punctuation space) show up as squares in IE.
