What you're doing sounds awesome, I'm going to try it out after I finish writing this.

However... I'd rather see this written more like an API just to pull out data from the locations fields, some sort of hook mechanism here to do some custom stuff and then write it all to a KML file.

I'll probably look at your code and pull off a hack or two of my own as I have a real desire to have this functionality as an extension of my site but I do need to pull in some other information stored in some CCK fields and have them processed before the KML is written.

Probably I'll end up writing something myself to get this all together.

The views-based version of the KML module does much of what you describe, and will be released soon.
