If you empty the index and have the spellcheck feature enabled, odd things can happen - such as Solr suggesting as a spelling suggestion the exact same word wghich you just searched for an got 0 results.

Works like a charm. Eliminates the stale results that were a little confusing when reindexing is incomplete.
