As I work for a web development company, I will only have the time to port this to D6 when the demand for this module in a D6 project arises. Having said that, if someone else wishes to do the actual work, I'll be more than happy to provide assistance / support.
Ok, I started to convert the module to D6, but it seems that Views 2's API is MUCH more complicated than Views 1's. It's gonna take some time to do that - I'm gonna have to investigate how Views 2 works exactly.
Update: I'm currently working on my first large-scale D6 project, and after some fiddling with Views 2 I think that the best approach would be a full rewrite of the module, building more on CCK's excellent views candidate nodes retrieval function and on the view display itself and use a less intrusive approach to theming the whole thing. I'm going to attempt this in the near future.
I will, however, have to remove the exposed sorting in the candidates view, though, as exposed sorting is not supported in Views 2.
Also see the modal framework module and nodereference explorer. They provide some of this functionality, I believe, but may be more complicated and feature rich than fans of this module prefer.
