Is it possible to have a configurable block that displays thumbnails of the next and previous image that you are viewing? This is similar to the one built in, but it could be a block so that you can place it anywhere. You could also make it configurable to display X# of prev images and X# of next images. That way you can just have a simple prev and next, or you could have a strip preview of say 0 previous images and 5 next images. Or 1 previous image 4 next images.

hum, not sure if this is easy to implement. This is AJAX driven module and there is still ticket ( #333880 ) regarding to jCarousel (an image carousel). Unless I fight with it, I`m afraid I cannot do this also.
