There are a couple of options I think, I personally have been using: Integrated Metatags.

You can define static site wide metatags and/or generate them from stuff associated with the node in question e.g. I've created a "metatag description" and "metatag keywords" CCK text field for each of the content types on my site so that when create/edit a page I can create a custom set of tags specific for that node. Integrated Metatags then grabs those fields and uses the text as the metatags.
