Hi,

Views is so powerful in drupal, I'd like to know if it can be applied to an external data source (e.g. another database on the same server).

Absolutely, go to the project/views, and then follow to the documentation. Or, if you've installed advanced help, follow to the same place through the help! There are detailed instructions to link to external data - given it's tricky..
