Sometimes the "open in new window" stops functioning, is there a way to add to the statusbar when hovering over link to show "open in new window" to tell us if it's working or not ?

Not particularly. Many browsers have decided that changing the status bar is a security risk, because websites were able to make it look like a link was going one place but set the status bar to something else. Other browsers like Safari just tell you always when a link will open a new window with something like, "Open http://google.com in a new window".
