If I understand your problem correctly, you ask how you can make sure that your Drupal 6 site has the same content as you have now in Drupal 5. Normally, if you follow the update instructions from http://drupal.org/upgrade/ , this should happen automatically. There are two cases where such an automatic update will fail:

  • If you use modules that do not yet work with Drupal 6, all content that needs those modules will not be accessible after an upgrade. You've got to get creative in such a case and rebuild content types using CCK or otherwise find a transition.
  • There are many users (I'm amongst them, unfortunately) for whom the upgrade does not work as planned. As I still don't know what's causing those problems, I can't help you there.

Whatever you do: Backup your site and your database first!
