Are there any modules that could work alongside this module, so users can buy a role.

Let's say you have the following roles

Free free
Basic £10/year
Premium £18/year

So a user buys a role of their chose.

Ubercart has a role promotion/purchase feature that works well. It is independent of this module....

That's a great idea, but beyond the scope of this module.

I'd go with Chad's suggestion.
